Day 61...The Diary of Anne Frank - 26th August
Forgot to drink water last night, and woke up at 2pm sick as a dog. We missed our inclusive breakky as wel. Had a vomit in the shared toilet, and hid in bed sleeping and watching cable. Lucky the dutch don't dub as much as the germans. Nate was a gem and got us some sandwiches for lunch. He is more practised at drinking than me, so he pulled up rather nicely, despite drinking copious amounts. Bastard.
Finally got up at 5pm, had to chuck but the share toilet was occupied, so had to do it in the sink of our room, then unclog it. Lots of fun.
Trammed it to the Anne Frank house dodging torrential rain. The Anne Frank house is where they hid during the war and she wrote in her diary. We had evening tickets so walked stright in the side past the line (not more expensive, just prepaid smarter haha!) but it was still packed inside. You went through the factory office part, then up the stairs, behind the bookcase and into their living space. It was bigger than we expected, but being in there constantly with 8 people for 2 years would not be comfy. It was really eerie in there as everything was pretty much left as it is. The dad who owned the factory put it in his right hand mans name, and he left it all the same and waited until the dad made it back from concentration camp (he did, but no one else did i think). The furniture was all gone, but there were pencil marks where the mum had measured Anne and her sisters height over the 2 years they were there. Anne Franks room still had all the pictures she pasted onto the walls. The bummer of it all was that she died in the Bergen Belson concentration camp about 1 month before they were liberated. The whole thing was very sad as she was only a little girl. My lip trembled a few times, but there was no repeat of Dachau thank god. I think I was too busy feeling sick to be sad. How bad would it be if I vomited in the Anne Frank house! Such sacrilege! The windows were all boarded up so there was no considering it.
It had stopped raining when we got out, so we walked to Leidisplein which was south of the centre in the theatre district. Met up with Kristin and Chris who had spent the day sitting in beanbags in the park and drinking. Had Italian for dinner and started to feel better as we had not eaten except for the sandwich earlier that day (which I had promptly lost in the sink). The streets around the square were nice, and we went to a coffeeshop for a smoke and hot chocolate. Then we parted ways and went to bed around 1am as I felt like crap.
