Day 13...New York, New York - 9th July
Woke up early (groan) and played hide and seek with the other people on the floor for the bathroom. I'm out of undies and wearing an old pair inside out so we went to a laundromat and washed our clothes and entertained ourselves by watching a crazy person. THey are usual fare here in the good old US of A.
After some good clothes washin' we headed straight to Times Square to the ESPN sports bar to watch the soccer World Cup final game. Its in midtown which is a mix of tall highrises and a mishmash of shops, most of them takeaway and pretzel stands and stuff. The bar was packed and we all had to stand, but we got some good spots right on the bar with full view of the massive screen. We got there a few hours early too, so after a few hours my feet were killing me, but after several drinks they felt fine and dandy let me tell you!
I spooked an annoying semi-crazy guy out by telling him we play football without the girly grid iron helmets (he didn't appreciate that and got quite offended with me haha).
We ended up getting quite pissy-arse drunk and had a fantastic time shouting and cheering and getting excited. The crowd was really infectious and there was a good mix of Italian and German fans. (One thing I'll say about Americans as well, this whole trip when we've said we were Australian, most of them say almost straight away that we got gipped during the world cup! Too right I say!)
We struck up a conversation with a nice old chap called Charles Fiori who was from New Jersey and he bought us a round of drinks which was nice of him.
Then we stumbled around the city taking stupid useless photographs of each other and taking the piss and laughing and teasing each other and having a great time. I saw that weird skinny triangular building (I think it was the iron building or something?) and it is very famous so I insisted that we walk several blocks (nearly 10 I think) so that we could stand at the bottom of it. I saw several French Bulldogs on the way so that got me all excited too (they are everywhere here!). After standing under it, there wasn't much else to do and we were starting to get hungover so I insisted that we get tacos, as I had seen a good place 10 blocks back. Mmmm tacos. We ate some at the Maui Hawaiin taco joint, which is weird to me coz I thought Hawaiins weren't the traditional purveyors of tacos were they not? Anyways, it was only $4 each and they tasted pretty great. Being drunk, anything salty is fantastic anyway.
Since we had spent our daily budget on booze for the day, we were hungover and tired and trying to get our clocks back in order so we staggered home and were in bed at around 11pm. I passed out with the lightbulb fuly on in my face somehow...
