Day 106...Beware Greeks bearing guns - 10th October
Slept in. And in and in and in. It was raining anyway so we didn't get up till 12pm when it started to peter off. Eventually we got our act together and meandered through the streets. They are very narrow and windy (no cars) and just white white white everywhere! Very pretty. We ended up at the port (Mykonos is not very big) and had lunch.
Mykonos is lovely. ALl the buildings are white, with coloured doors and shutters. It gives everything a bright and fresh look. It was overcast that arvo and a bit cool so we didn't do much today except for rest and get some work done at an Internet cafe (4 hours). Our hotel owner we met downstairs. He's a really laid back guy. Brought up in Sydney, educated in America and Greek. Nothing flaps him, he just sits on his front steps and chills out. I like him alot. Our hotel is a whitewashed building (surprise) with a little outdoors balcony overlooking purple boguanvillea and a higgly piggly mass of white buildings. We got dressed and went out for drinks that evening.
We found a really cute place which was overhanging the sea. Sitting at the window and looking at the choppy surf we enjoyed 2 for 1 cocktails (drinks are expensive here, so it was a really good deal). Dinner was had a bit further away in a busy street with pelicans wandering around. We had an ouzo (nates first). Its a spirit, and they put it with a bit of water and it gets all milky and cloudy. Its really on the nose, very much like licorice but not as nice. We also had teh greek speciality of wrapped vine leaves. A pelican was hanging around right near our table and I saw a guy patting him. So snuck up and gave him a pat too! He was really cute and unfazed by it! THe hotel waiters weren't impressed though, grabbed him buy the beak and led him away! awww.
We heard the nightlife is big in Mykonos here, but it is off season. Hearing some 'boom boom' music, we followed our ears and found - a contiki bar! Ick! We went in though, coz all the other bars we have found are gay bars with big rainbow flags out the front. They also have interesting names like the 'Ram Rod club'. I know Geoff would like a bar like that. haha!!
Inside though was depraved and crap. Everyone was eyeing each other off for a one night stand, and it just looked really sad so we left and went to bed.
PS there are cats and kittens everywhere!
